How to correctly diagnose your skin for optimal glow   

If you are wondering why diagnosing your skin correctly is so important for optimal glow – you are not alone.

Thanks to Instagram  – with its multitude of girls dripping and pouring oils and serums over their faces so that they can achieve that ‘luminous glow’ with makeup on – girls have forgotten that the actual importance of using the correct skincare will naturally give them that luminous glow – nothing beats real beautiful skin.

To achieve genuinely beautiful glowing skin – the correct diagnosis is paramount – it is the same as going to the doctor – if the doctor’s diagnosis is wrong – you will not get well.

You might think you know what skin type you have – but I am here to say that you most probably don’t. I spend most of my working hours with women who think they are using the correct skincare – 10 minutes with me – and 90% of their products are in the bin.

Their self-diagnosis is completely wrong – and tragically – often it is not their diagnosis but someone else’s who recommended the incorrect products over the counter in a pharmacy or beauty store.

2 weeks using what I recommend and I am looking at a new skin on these girls – and I don’t sell skin care products! I just diagnose their skins correctly.

If you do not know what your skin type is, what the underlying cause of your problem skin issues are – you cannot use the correct care to improve it – to get that gorgeous dreamy glow you are after.

This blog post is all about skincare diagnosis – the next blog post (next week ) will be all about treating every individual skin type – although I will add links throughout this post to guide you to more information.

So what skin type do you have?

Oily skin.

Most people who think they have oily skin – actually do not have this skin type at all. More often than not the owner of the oily skin actually has combination skin.

Oily skin is characterised by an overproduction of sebum (otherwise known as oil) and feels thicker than normal, combination or dry skins.

The pores are often larger than other skins as well.

Many girls think they have oily skin because they keep breaking out.  But the breakouts are more often than not hormonal or bad diet or both.  Other causes for breakouts can be stress or pollution or again a mix of all of them.

Combination skin.

 Combination skin is characterised by the existence of two or more different skin conditions – for example – the skin may be oily around the ‘T’ zone (the forehead, nose, and chin). The cheeks are often normal or dry. Many girls who have combination skin think their skin is oily.

When taking care of your combination skin – you need to treat the oily skin area as you would an oily skin and the normal or dry skin as such.

If you treat the dry skin as you would an oily skin, you will end up with problems in the dry area, and if you treat the oily skin as a dry skin, you will end up with issues in this area.

Often due to over-cleansing the dry area, or over nourishing the oily area breakouts occur, or the skin looks dull and flaky.

This skin is very common – which is why so many clients of mine struggle to find the perfect skincare routine – as they more than not treat the whole face as oily.


Normal skin

 This skin is not at all common – but it is the perfect skin everyone would love to have. This is the skin we all work towards achieving. This skin is healthy, pimple-free, even textured and is never too oily or dry.

This skin still needs attention – if left alone it will age – and badly at that – but if taken care off, it will stay looking gorgeous for a very long time.

Dry skin

 Dry skin is often very dry due to genes, poor diet, and or lack of fluid intake. Dry skin girls usually have the best skin throughout puberty – but as they go into their 20s this is when it starts to play up.

The skin is often dry due to lazy sebaceous glands (oil follicles).

It does not break out – and looks even-toned and matt throughout youth.

This skin needs to be well-nourished to ensure that it does not age badly. It can be very hard to manage during the winter months.

Dehydrated skin 

I see so many girls with this skin – basically, 95% of my clients have this skin – and they are from all walks of life.

Dehydrated skin can be due to too much sun, wind, harsh soaps, poor diet and lack of fluid intake.

Often it is due to incorrect use of cosmetics – too many stripping cleansers or masks.

Medication can also be the cause of problem dehydrated skin or alcohol.

Dehydrated skin can often be quickly fixed by changing the diet and skincare regime.


Acne skin

Four pimples on your face does not mean you have acne. I cannot say this loudly or more often enough!


Acne skin is not combination skin with a smattering of pimples over your face.

Acne skin is oily skin and can affect the face, shoulders and back as well. Acne is brought on by an imbalance in hormones or a bad diet or both.

Acne is a variety of pimples, whiteheads and blackheads. The skin is angry and inflamed looking, more often than not red. Very often, due to overuse of stripping products, dry and flaky.

Acne needs to be treated with care from inside as well as out, it often cannot be cured, but will fix itself in time if constant care is taken on the outside by regular skincare, good hygiene and an adjusted diet (it could also be caused due to food allergies – read more here).

Congested skin

Congested skin is skin which has either white lumps on it (milia) or clear lumps on it. Many people think these are pimples – and as such, they are of sorts.

Milia used to be the bain of oily-skinned individuals – but now it is seen a lot more often with all skin types.

Clear lumps and whiteheads are becoming quite common.

The main causes are lack of correct cleansing and regular exfoliation – but the constant use of sunscreen.

They can also be due to sluggish liver caused due to a fatty or starchy diet, and alcohol.

Sensitive skin

I hear this a lot “I have sensitive skin”

When I ask what the cause is of their sensitive skin – they tell me that they are allergic to certain products.

This is what I call product sensitive skin – which has usually been brought on by overuse of the incorrect skincare causing the skin’s acid mantle – which is the skin’s surface protective layer to become damaged or completely stripped.

There are also so many chemicals in our products today – that people are becoming progressively more sensitive to those.

Although the main causes for sensitivity if not product-related could be eczema, psoriasis, acne rosacea, dermatitis or premature ageing brought on by sun damage.

If the skin is product sensitive – this can be changed quickly and easily by use of the correct skincare.

Couperose skin

 Couperose skin, is skin that has broken capillaries (tiny veins) running all over the cheeks, sometimes across the nose, on the chin and décolletage (upper chest area).

This skin is often very sensitive as the blood vessels are not elastic enough to handle the flow of blood that is forced through them – so they stretch and break.

This condition is often caused by sun and wind – hot and cold conditions.

Hot spicy foods and alcohol can also be offenders (think the red nose of a long-term alcoholic).

The stupid fad online at the moment is to apply ice cubes to the skin – so in around 10 years that will be a major cause as well.


Mature / Aging skin

Mature skin is always dry – even if it was oily during the owner’s youth. We are talking about mature skin, not premature skin – this subject is next.

As a person advances in years, the body’s cells are not replaced as rapidly as they did during their youth.

Collagen does not renew itself as efficiently, skin looses its elasticity and so starts to sag.

For women post-menopause – loss of hormones worsens this problem, and for those who have not or do not take added care of themselves or their skin, it becomes emotionally debilitating watching their faces and bodies head south.

Skin’s will age differently depending on how much time and attention each skin is given throughout the person’s life.

Diet will also affect how well or badly the skin ages. Levels of stress, alcohol usage and if the person smokes or not.

Genes are only responsible for 20% – of how well the skin ages, so if your mum had great skin, it does not mean you will have – her diet could have been better, her lifestyle could have been cleaner or simpler.

Premature aged skin

I see so much of this in Australia – not as much as I used to with most girls applying sunscreen, and avoiding the sun.

Although skins are not as damaged – I am seeing vitamin D deficiency symptoms and severely congested skins due to overuse of sunscreens.

Premature ageing skin is red, dehydrated, sensitive, irritated, dry, blotchy, pigmented, and basically angry looking.

It often has whiteheads (I will discuss this in an upcoming blog) wrinkled and thickened.

Like mature skin, the skin lacks elasticity.
