Weight loss is something most women are completely obsessed about, if not all the time, at least throughout one or another time of their lives.
Nearly everyone is looking for that perfect overnight quick fix – the ultimate solution to their not so slender waistlines.
The reality is – there is no weight loss pill, but there is one ingredient in your kitchen that does not cost a fortune like so many pills, and actually does help you along the way when you decide to embrace a weight loss or weight management plan, and it tastes delicious too!
This tasty spice can help your weight loss process because of its multiple abilities.
1 – It controls insulin levels
Cinnamon contains flavon-3-ol antioxidants which have the unique ability to imitate the activity of insulin in the body. For those who are unfamiliar with the process of glucose metabolism, insulin is the chemical that helps your body regulate its blood sugar levels (glucose).
If you are familiar with conditions like diabetes, you know that maintaining a blood sugar level is important as spikes that are either too high or too low can be dangerous.
Even for non-diabetics, increased blood sugar levels can be problematic because they cause excess fat to be stored, making it harder for people to maintain or lose weight.
Cinnamon helps regulate your levels so this excess fat does not build up.
2 – Decreases blood sugar
For the reasons mentioned above, maintaining a regulated blood sugar level is important for weight loss.
Cinnamon can help do this by controlling insulin quantities as well as directly act on the blood sugar itself. A study has even shown that adding cinnamon to a meal can lower its glycemic index by 18-29%.
Eating lower glycemic foods (GI) is important to avoid spikes in your blood sugar levels.
3 – Speeds up metabolism
Cinnamon has the ability to alter the metabolism of not only sugar but of carbohydrates as well. Your body is better able to use your carbohydrate storage so that the carbohydrates do not turn into excess fat.
It also causes a metabolic reaction. Similar to when you eat hot peppers, the presence of cinnamon in your body allows your metabolism to speed up just because it takes a little extra energy to metabolize.
This boost in metabolism allows you to burn more calories and assists with weight loss.
4 – Lowers LDL cholesterol
Research has also supported the idea that cinnamon can help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol, which is great for your heart health. Diabetic participants in a recent study showed lower LDL among other weight loss indicators like BMI when taking the given dose of cinnamon during the study period. My family all suffer from high cholesterol, no matter what they do or do not do. A couple of them have started adding larger doses of cinnamon to their daily diets, and now those who have done so continuously, are all off their cholesterol-lowering medications!
5 – Helps to burn belly fat
The consumption of cinnamon is said to impact abdominal fat more so than fat found in other parts of your body. This is often a problem area for many, so this is good news for those who have struggled to lose body fat. Not only does it benefit your dress or pants size, but abdominal fat is actually the most dangerous type of fat as it surrounds some of our most vital organs. For this reason, less belly fat is good for your overall health.
6 – Suppresses appetite
Cinnamon suppresses your appetite but it also suppresses your sugar cravings, making it so much easier to not look for sugary foods. If cinnamon is taken with honey, this also alleviates your need for something sweet.
How to use it
The recommended dose is ½ to1 teaspoon per day. This is easy enough to integrate into your diet.
It can just be taken mixed with the same amount of honey and swallowed that way. Or added to a cup of warm or hot water.
You can add it to your cereal or porridge, tea or coffee, or your morning smoothie or protein shake – or you can now also buy cinnamon capsules! I highly recommend organic as is best because it is free of any other chemicals and easy enough to purchase.
Remember, it is not a magic pill, but it will help your weight loss goals as long as you are also exercising and eating a healthy diet!
