Could your laptop or oven be ageing you?

Seriously – how can my laptop age me? Or my oven? Or a light bulb? Come on!

We are aware of UVA and UVB rays from the sun, UVB being the obvious damaging rays which most chemical sunblocks block, they are the rays that cause you to turn red. Whilst UVA rays are more insipid, their damage is not immediately visible, but they destroy collagen and elastic fibres as well as contributing to skin cancer.

But now, scientists have found that there is another player in the field of ageing – they are called Infrared Rays.

Infrared rays are not only produced by the sun, but also by electric ovens, certain light bulbs, hairdryers, and laptops.

Basically, the heat we feel from our toaster, tv, laptop, oven, microwave and lights are infrared rays. We actually cannot get away from them.

50% of the sun’s radiation is infrared rays.

The most damaging of rays are Infrared-A rays (IRA). These rays do not produce any heat and are the most damaging of all.

Dermatologist Professor Leslie Baumann MD says that “infrared A rays can damage the mitochondria by generating free radicals and inducing damaging MMP (matrix metalloproteinase) expression which breaks down the structural integrity of the skin.”

Clinical studies show that infrared A rays result in activation of MMP-1 and MMP-3 cellular enzymes which cause a breakdown of collagen and elastin.

In my article on collagen, I show how collagen breakdown does not only affect the way our skins look, but also how it affects our organs and tissues of the body. One of the most obvious signs of loss of collagen is arthritis.

Mitochondria are known as the powerhouses of a cell. (We are made up of trillions of cells.) They are organelles that act like a digestive system which takes in nutrients, breaks them down, and creates energy-rich molecules for the cell.

So when infrared A rays damage the trillions of cells which we are made up of, every part of our body is damaged, not just our skins alone.

Infrared rays are being linked to a condition known as ‘laptop rash’. The skin may present with red or brown blotches on areas of heat contact with computers.

So – now that you are panicking – what can you do about this?

The best protection for your skin is mineral makeup. Mineral makeup contains high levels of Zinc Oxide which works as a physical sun barrier.

Sunscreens containing zinc oxide will protect you from the sun, but then again, do we want to wear sunscreen or mineral makeup from the moment we get up!?

Keeping up our antioxidant intake is a must, we should be eating foods high in antioxidants such as; Red berries, purple-red and blue grapes, blueberries, nuts, dark green veggies, sweet potato and orange veggies such as carrots, green tea and brown rice and whole grains.

If you struggle to get all the above in your diet, you can also support your superfood intake by consuming a  red veggie blend drink and or a green drink. Alternatively or as well, take Grapeseed extract as it is incredibly high in antioxidants.

Bone broth made from meat bones, chicken bones or fish bones will boost collagen and amino acid levels in the body, which support our health in so many ways. But if you cannot face a cup of bone broth a day, you can supplement with a collagen supplement made from beef bones or fish.

But my favourite collagen booster (I am a vegetarian) is Edible Beauty’s Native Collagen Powder  it works better than any of the meat derived collagen powders – I used to take those when I still consumed meat – and although they worked – this worked better!

By switching all electrics off as early as you can at night, not only will you sleep better, but you could help keep your body healthier, younger and stronger for longer!
