Yesterday’s blog post covered the reasons why you could be toxic, and today we look into how you can detoxify without giving up having a life by integrating a few things into your day which will slowly and steadily give you the results you want and most probably need.
So how to detoxify?
So the following ideas will give you the results – just not as quickly as a straight forward detox. In actual fact, the following should be practised all of the time.
Make sure you exercise daily. Be it walking, yoga, tai chi, HITT, qigong or using a vibration machine – you must do a minimum of 15 minutes per day.
This is to get your blood flowing and your lymphatic system moving.
The lymphatic system is part of the circulatory system and is a vital part of the immune system. It is comprised of a network of lymphatic vessels that carry a clear fluid called lymph directionally towards the heart. Unlike blood, which is pumped through the body by the heart, the lymphatic system needs muscle contractions to get it moving.
It is a highly important part of helping the body remove waste such as bacteria and toxins.
Hydrotherapy has been used for hundreds of years for many causes. Hot, cold therapy, makes the blood and lymphatics rush through the body especially if you move your muscles whilst undergoing this treatment. Start every morning with your own hydro therapy treatment, by skin brushing your skin towards your heart from your extremities (fingers and toes) in light vigorous strokes.
Have your warm shower as always, followed by a burst of 30 seconds or more of cold water. If serious, repeat the warm then the cold water again.
I cannot begin to tell you how amazing you feel after this – it really gets your endorphins going! No matter how tired you are, you feel great! And ready to take on the day.
Drink 2 – 3 litres of purified water per day.
Ideally, start your day off with a glass of warm purified water before you do anything else. Then, the easiest way to drink the rest is to fill up water bottles and drink those throughout the day. I recommend you stop drinking the water before 6 pm so you are not up all night going to the toilet. You should need to urinate at least every 1.5 hours. Want to step up the results? Add pieces of cut lemon to your water to create more of a detox, and 10 MLS of Chlorophyll liquid – I add 10 MLS per bottle of water.
Have a green drink.
I call it a green drink as it is not a tasty smoothie, it is all about getting the right things into it.
The green drink should contain 1 tablespoon of greens such as barley and or wheatgrass and or alfalfa sprouts – or a mix of all. These greens are high in chlorophyll.
Chlorophyll helps to purify the blood by binding to toxins and improving the body’s ability to bring oxygen to the cells.
By improving oxygen delivery it improves the intracellular energy production and antioxidant systems.
Also high in Chlorophyll but also high in Omega’s, magnesium and zinc, which are all incredibly important to our body’s health, but lacking in most people’s diets, are Chlorella and Spirulina.
Add 1 tablespoon of Chlorella or Spirulina or both. For detoxing I prefer pure Chlorella as it stimulates the peristalsis of the bowel assisting in the elimination of toxins, and also supports the growth of probiotic flora in the gut.
Chlorella also contains the phytonutrient sporopollenin, which is able to bind neurotoxic debris extremely well. This includes heavy metals such as mercury, cadmium, lead and biotoxins like mould, Lyme, tetanus and tuberculosis toxins.
Add LSA (linseed, almond and sunflower meal) to increase fibre to sweep out the gut.
I just mix up all the ingredients in cold organic cold green tea for its antioxidant effect (I immerse 2 green tea bags in boiled water in a cup the night before), or you can mix it with coconut water, or just purified water.
If you find the taste too unbearable – mix it in pure apple juice till you get used to it. But remember, the apple juice contains fructose which is something you should ideally avoid whilst detoxing. But better to drink real apple juice than not drink the green drink!
The green drink with detoxify the gut and liver, and create an alkaline environment in the body. The more alkaline the body, the healthier it is.
Take with this green drink 500 – 1000 mg of Milk Thistle.
Milk Thistle is one of the most powerful liver detoxifying agents. The active compound found in Milk Thistle is called Silymarin. Research has shown that Milk Thistle supplementation helps to boost 2 major intracellular antioxidants, glutathione and superoxide dismutase. In one study Silymarin increased glutathione levels in the liver cells by 50%. This helps protect the intestines from damage, protecting us from issues such as leaky gut,
It also protects the thyroid and immune system from radiation stress. Gamma radiation is a serious risk factor for the development of thyroid problems and various cancers.
The greens all work as a prebiotic, preparing the way for a good probiotic. Our bodies are 90% microbial meaning our microbes outnumber our human cells by 10:1!
Many probiotics do not make it past the stomach acid. The green drink will help a good probiotic make it to the small and large intestine where they are needed to kill off bad bacteria, yeasts and moulds.
A gut full of healthy flora is incredibly important in assisting the bowel with detoxification.
Also, take Selenium, it is a trace mineral that acts as an antioxidant which plays a key role in detoxification and immune regulation.
There are strong links between selenium deficiencies and the development of autoimmune conditions especially those affecting the thyroid gland.
It also has a strong binding affinity for mercury and other heavy metals. The best way to take is as L-selenomethionine at 200 – 400 mcg.
Breakfast ideally should contain an organic high fibre cereal, or if you find you bloat when eating cereals or bread – go gluten-free. Ideally topped with fresh fruit, natural organic yoghurt or cashew yoghurt (over coconut yoghurt as it doesn’t contain any protein) and raw milk, organic soy or almond milk.
But, if you crave an egg on toast – do so, just avoid sugar and have a seeded bread.
Choose organic butter or vegan butter over margarine, and ideally eat sprouted enzymatic bread over normal seeded bread. You just have to make sure you eat fibre with every meal.
Lunch and dinner should be 50 % salad or cooked vegetables, 25% fibre in the form of brown rice, quinoa, wholemeal pasta, beans, sweet potato and 25% animal or plant protein.
Add a variety of fermented foods to your diet such as Apple Cider Vinegar (you can add 1 tablespoon daily to your green drink) sauerkraut, kimchi, coconut milk kefir, kombucha, pickles, tempeh natto, miso or any form of fermented vegetables.
Fermented foods will help with your digestion and gut health.
Make sure you consume plenty of good fats such as Avocado, Flaxseed oil, coconut oil, and olive oil with every meal as these good oils help you digest your food.
Avoid white bread, cake, biscuits sweets chocolate and all forms of sugar. If you are dying for a piece of something sweet – eat pure chocolate high in cacao –if it must contain sugar – organic sugar. The cacao is high in antioxidants.
A delicious healthy treat, is cacao powder with a teaspoon of stevia in hot raw milk, soy or almond milk (the later adds a nutty touch).
There are also a variety of Paleo treats on the shelves now – these are all healthy, no sugar, and will ease the sugar cravings you will have as the dying bad bacteria in your gut starts to scream at you to feed it.
If out, and you need a glass of something – have a glass of a good red – preferably organic or something 3 years or older.
Young reds contain high quantities of preservatives and sulphites which break down over the years – both are obviously toxic!
Two supplements which have to be taken between meals are Glutathione and Alpha Lipoic Acid.
Glutathione is a very special anti-oxidant compound which provides the body with the highest level of antioxidant protection.
Every cell in the body produces it, and many longevity scientists believe that the level of glutathione in our cells is predictive of how long we will live.
It is called the master antioxidant due to its essential role in maintaining all other essential antioxidants such as vitamin C and E in their active forms.
It is critical to cellular detoxification as it acts like the cell’s security guard, protecting the delicate genetic material from free radical stress.
It is estimated that every cell within the body faces approximately 10,000 strikes by free radicals daily. It plays a key role in disarming free radicals and cleaning up any mess before any lasting damage occurs.
Glutathione is rapidly broken down by the digestive tract, so supplementing can be a bit tricky. Research has shown that there are three forms which have a direct impact on Glutathione levels – you ideally need to speak again to a naturopath in a health food store to find out which works for you.
The 3 types are;
N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) – this supplement is a precursor to the major antioxidant. It is highly effective in increasing glutathione levels within the body. It can be taken with or without food 400 – 1200 mg daily in 2 – 3 doses.
Liposomal Glutathione – this glutathione is great when combined with liposomes as it needs the liposomes to get it through the digestive tract and into the cells. Only purchase it with sunflower lecithin take without food 1 – 2 doses at 200 – 500 mg.
S – Acetylated Glutathione – is very similar to liposomal glutathione as it passes through the gut and diffuses into the body. The acetylated bone is then cleaved by enzymes within the cells without requiring any energy expenditure. Take away from food 1 -2 times daily at 200 – 500 mg.
Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) is a powerful anti-oxidant which has both water and fat-soluble properties meaning it can go in and out of major organs such as the brain, liver and nerves.
It increases glutathione levels indirectly by regenerating antioxidants such as vitamin C, E and Q10. Lipoic acid protects the mitochondria from oxidative stress and toxicity better than anything else. Much research is being done indicating that ALA maintains insulin sensitivity, optimizing blood sugar levels and strengthens blood vessels.
It improves adrenal output, strengthens the gut lining and protects against leaky gut syndrome as well as assisting the liver to detoxify effectively. It also reduces inflammation and balances the tone of the immune system in such a way that it reduces autoimmune activity. Take 400 – 800 R – alpha-lipoic acid daily 1-2 times between meals.
We are often not aware of how stressed we are, as we live so many of our days running from place to place, working to deadlines, and fitting in social outings.
Sometimes trauma caused in our past stays with us and haunts us – not always on a conscious level, but it is there. I am personally not a believer in dredging up the past and milling on it, although some say that sitting down and writing a diary of all of the bad things which happened in our past helps us clear it all away.
But one thing which helps, either way, is to give ourselves time every day to meditate, to wind down, to be grateful for the good things which happened to us that day, be grateful for the loved ones in our lives.
One product which has a 100% hit rate at helping keep your mind clear and switched on, yet keeps you feeling calm, grounded and in control is Ashwagandha, otherwise known as Withania Somnifera.
This amazing herb is extensively used in Ayurveda, the traditional health care system in India. Ashwagandha is used as a general tonic and “adaptogen”, helping the body adapt to stress as it relaxes the mind, rejuvenates the body and increases resistance to stress.
Experimental studies demonstrate that Ashwagandha is an antioxidant that supports resistance to physical, biological, and chemical stresses and supports endurance, muscle recovery and cognitive health. It helps your mind deal with issues which would otherwise cause you to worry, therefore helping you find solutions.
Take 1 tablet twice daily with meals starting at over 500 mg daily and lowering amount as your stress levels subside.
The first few days detoxing could have you feeling worse than before.
Ideally start your detox on a weekend, so that by Monday you are starting to come out of the haze – although day three of a detox program can sometimes mean an amazing relationship with the toilet!
Or start the detox in baby steps.
First, add the water, and adjust your diet, then add the greens, then add the supplements – although I do recommend you start with the Aswagandha from day one – it is amazing how different you feel once the stress levels drop!
